SOUTH VIETNAM
Can’t get more southern than the country’s Soc Trang province . Its famous bún mam (a soup so strikingly potent with herbs, chili and fish paste it makes pho taste as bland as Campbell’s) is the hit at Thanh Mai . When you’re done with that Haight-Ashbury of a bowl, advance to the bún rieu oc: crabmeat/sea snail soup. (GA) 9569 Bolsa Ave., Westminster, (714) 531-4088.

Jen Kuo said: "Ummm...Taiwan is it's own country NOT under China."
Well, "China" can refer to the People's Republic of China only, or the Mainland only, or it can also include Taiwan and the other ROC-controlled territories. It depends on the context. When people talk about Chinese food, Taiwanese food is considered a branch of Chinese food.

Thanks for nothing, Gustavo. Now I'm going to eat more than I should.

Next time I go to China I'll make sure to visit Islamic Province.

Next you're gonna tell me Quebec food isn't a defining characteristic of OC. Sheesh.
Seriously, I get it, and you can't have a huge article detailing a "noahbites"-style trip around the world... but three whole continents.
(Are there any Australian places here anyway? I wonder what differentiates Perth-style food from Brisbane-style food. More roo, maybe. And I don't think they serve drop-bear fillet in Perth. And how does McMurdo-style Antarctican food differ from South Pole-style Antarctican food?)

Das: Actually, there are three Bolivian places, but again: that does not regional variety make. Same goes for the Peruvian and Argentine jointstoo much of the same for the former (with the exception of El Misti), not enough of the latter. The Colombian place is long gone, as is the Chilean place (that was in Garden Grove, not Anaheim). And South American cuisine simply doesn't define the Orange County gourmand experienceyet...
Das Ubergeek 08/08/2009 1:33:00 AM
Come on, Gustavo, there's two Bolivian places, a pretty decent showing of Peruvian, a Chilean place here in the Heim of Ana, a Colombian place on Bristol (if it's still there...), several Argentine places... there are even Ecuadorian places.
But that's OK. I don't really want lines at those places anyway. :)

Jen: Read what I told Chuck DeVore.
Confused and Kermit: Reread the intro. There are simply not enough South American or African restaurants in Orange County to have enough regional variety as the other countries and regions mentioned. The only countries I feel bad about excluding were France and the Philippines, but I'd argue those cuisines aren't as essential to the Orange County foodie experience as those we mentioned.
Philly Girl: Gracias for your comments. Duly noted about DeSimone's!

FYI- there is also a DeSimone's on Tustin St. in Orange.
And Mos II rocks. Even a mere rice bown with their fantastic teriyaki sauce and Tapatio can take away a case of the sads!

Another thing to point out why Philly's Best is superior to other cheesesteak places in CA- they import Amoroso rolls and use White American Cheese (much, much better than yellow). When I get homesick, this is my go-to comfort food place. However when I go back to Philly, I forget how much more cheesesteak you get for less moneh. C'est la vie!

Mexico is 14% of the world?
What about the Southern Hemisphere?
Confused Consumer 08/07/2009 9:43:00 AM
Where's South America and Africa?

Ummm...Taiwan is it's own country NOT under China.
