Across the Seas: A History of Navigation

Last week, Southern California resident Zac Sunderland, 17, became the youngest person ever to sail around the world by himself. The 13-month journey was a magnificent feat in itself, but imagine having to do the same without the modern amenities like, oh, say a radio. Or a GPS. The Newport Nautical Harbor Museum presents “Across the Seas: A History of Navigation,” an exhibition that not only features new seafaring technology, but also gives visitors a chance to explore a time when sailors had to rely on celestial navigation and their own careful calculations of longitude and latitude. And you feel helpless when your cell phone battery dies...
