Crumb's Underground Opening ReceptionGrand Central Art CenterBy Annie WhartonPublished on July 09, 2009 at 2:41amFounder of Zap Comics, underground art scene pioneer and self-proclaimed misanthrope, R. Crumb was probably most widely-recognized for his Keep on Truckin poster and a Janis Joplin album cover until the 1994 Crumb documentary was made. Drawings featuring his psycho-sexual fancies (Amazonian women with thick legs and short skirts), sardonic text-based commentary and other dalliances opens this Saturday at Grand Central Art Center. G.C.A.C., the sole Southern California venue for the traveling exhibition, will show early works, vintage and recent collaborations, and a new series of spool drawings by the man art critic Robert Hughes once called the Breugel of the 20th Century.
