L.A.’s Foreign Born stretch and reach out farther than ever before on their new full-length, Person To Person (Secretly Canadian), which finds the band in confident command of ideas, influences and ambitions. And this just might hoist them out of their hometown and toward the insatiable sort of adoration that devours Fleet Foxes and Arcade Fires and deposits Mercury Prizes behind. Meticulously arranged indie-pop—think Walkmen or French Kicks—unfolds with precise references to outré visionaries like Dennis Wilson (“Vacationing People”), King Sunny Ade (“Early Warnings”), the Mekons (“That Old Sun”) and even the wild spiral-pattern guitar players in Sublime Frequencies favorites like Group Inerane. It’s an unpredictable listen and an unexpected—in all the best ways—accomplishment.
