You know how in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Brad Pitt was growing younger and Cate Blanchett was growing older but at one point they meet in the middle and everything was perfect? That’s kind of like this story. Written by Jason Robert Brown, The Last Five Years is a one-act musical with a cast of just two. Characters Jamie Wellerstein and Cathy Hiatt are married but the union is on its deathbed. And to narrate the course of their relationship, Cathy begins at the end and sings her way backward while Jamie begins at their first date and croons forward in time. The two actors never directly interact—except when they meet in the middle with a wedding song.
