‘It’s Pretty Common Knowledge That Writers Are Very Near the Bottom Rung of the Social Ladder’
Is this supposed to be sexy or something [Staff’s “The Pantsless Summer,” June 5]?
Charlie, via e-mail
I’m humbled by the amazing presentation of the Q&A [Matt Coker’s “Meet the Wave Master,” June 5]. As someone who almost always is on the other side of this media game, it was not only a pleasure working with you guys, but also inspiring. I’ve received dozens of positive reactions already.

Oh, YOU MEAN LIKE THIS ONE
Elliott Almond’s surfing book rocks. It sucks you in like a summer blockbuster. The stories are awesome.

HOW MUCH ARE YOU PAYING?
I always enjoy articles by this writer [Amanda Parsons’ “Help Wanted,” June 5]. She seems very witty and smart, yet still fun—like somebody you could hang out and drink a beer with, which is not how I imagine most writers. It’s pretty much common knowledge that writers are very near the bottom rung of the social ladder. And if that’s a picture of her, she can work for me any time.

THE C-WORD AND THE OTHER C-WORD . . .
Fuck you and the fedora offence, Trendchink [Vickie Chang’s Trendzilla, “Fedora Explorers,” May 29]. That picture was taken more than a year ago next to Caleb. Remember, you made fun of his suspenders as well? Have you even seen what I look like lately? I hate fedoras and don’t even look like that anymore. You guys are fuckin’ bored, aren’t you? Had nothing else to talk shit on. Your articles suck anyway. And you didn’t even ask for permission to use my picture on this article, you stupid cunt. You guys cut me out more than a year ago and think it’s cool to just use what you left out. And fuck you again for being late and a fuckin’ lazy Asian.

. . . AAAAND THE G-WORD AND THE N-WORD!
Will one of you please explain to your brilliant wannabe journalist that “almost” is opposed to “exclusively” [Gustavo Arellano’s “What the Chuck?” May 22] when he says “almost exclusively white”? And, of course, he makes it sound like an indictment. Gustavo Arellano is the voice of racism. I resent his constant insinuation that it is a crime to be white. I resent his use of the term “gabacho.” It’s every bit as vulgar and hate-filled a term as “nigger.” But what is one to expect from a self-serving free rag whose only revenue stream is advertising for prostitutes and strip joints in its back pages?

UP AND DOWN
Another good news story [Daffodil J. Altan’s “Uprising,” May 29] that left me with a high and a low. The high: The argument that kids should not be included in the gang injunction has merit. The low: For the influential members of the community to condemn the police department’s actions as a whole, claiming they were trying to harass the young people as a whole, is counterproductive. It is a clear message saying, ‘Gangbangers welcome here.’ If South Central has not arrived at this conclusion yet, it’s clearly on its way.
Lightfoot Letters, via e-mail
Protesting against a gang injunction? Ridiculous. Go cry me a river. What a waste of time. Why even write an article about it? You people are savages; that’s why you are getting slapped with this injunction. If you were decent citizens who contributed to society, this would not happen to you.

IS THAT A SERRANO IN YOUR BOLSILLO, OR ARE YOU JUST GLAD TO SEE ME?
Gustavo, you carry chiles with you when you’re going to a restaurant [Gustavo Arellano’s ¡Ask a Mexican! June 5]? That’s beyond paisa. Ha-ha!
El Paisa, via ocweekly.com
I’ve been following your Tweets for some time now and have read the paper a number of times. I’d never really clicked on any online links, though. But toward the end of a no-frills weekend, we made it down to Tustin’s Chili Cook Off. And I thought, “Hmm, I wonder where I could find more things like this to do . . .”
Keep up the good work. Maybe I’ll smarten up and read it more often. I’m so mad that I missed that Dodgeball Tourney in Newport!
