Told via monologue and song, Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Empire Theatre in Santa Ana employs the musical theater tropes of films like Velvet Goldmine and Rocky Horror Picture Show . In this award-winning production, the protagonist (born male in East Germany) has a sex-change to marry an American, move to a Kansas trailer park and escape her Communist environs. But the doctors botched the operation and left her with a little something extra. Adapted from the off-Broadway hit turned cult movie classic that’s come full circle back to the theater, Hedwig is a sassy, stylistic glam rock musical of an “internationally ignored” trans-gender’s journey into love, loss and the quest for recognition.
