Ex-I-09

Beall Center

Taking inspiration from creatures that live in inhospitable environments and the strange evolutionary adaptations they acquire (like the fish at the bottom of the ocean with built-in flashlights), artist Shih Chieh Huang creates eerie, yet beautiful, interactive installations for his “EX-I-09” exhibit. Using everyday objects such as household appliances, lights and computers, Huang says these common items are then “...dissected and disassembled as needed and reconstructed into experimental primitive organisms that reside on the fringes of evolutionary transformation.” The end result? Installations and sculptures with an astonishingly life-like, organic feel to them but also completely and totally sci-fi.
