Art and sports have long been a uniting force between countries that politically and economically just don’t get along—and it’s a tribute to our humanity that we can all momentarily suspend prejudices to appreciate the creativity and talents of people different from us. The Shen Yun Performing Arts troupe are a case in point: Audiences around the world routinely flock to see this band of dancers and musicians perform their modern-technology-tinged traditional fare and come away uplifted and inspired. Based in New York, the company’s mission is to bring the “true spirit of Chinese culture to life, free of any distortions from the Chinese Communist Party.” Sounds lovely already.
