The Science of Hockey

Discovery Science Center

By VICKIE CHANG

Published on April 30, 2009 at 2:40am

Sometimes you’ve just got to trick your kids into learning. The Discovery Science Center, the Anaheim Ducks, the National Hockey League and USA Hockey have joined forces to bring you “The Science of Hockey.” Through the sport, watch your kids actually enjoy bulking up on topics such as friction, weights, biology—and even some math. Sit in the penalty box. Experience life in the skates of an NHL goalie by trying to block shots from (virtual) opponents while learning about reaction processes in the body and how goalies are able to block a shot in as little as .15 seconds. Test your puck-shootin’ skills and learn about Newton’s first law of motions. Plus, our favorite, climb behind the wheel of a true-to-size Zamboni replica.
