Dr Laura Live! In Praise of Mom

Irvine Barclay Theatre

By STACY DAVIES

Published on April 30, 2009 at 2:41am

Out of all the pop-culture doctors over the past 40 years—Dr. Joyce Brothers, Dr. Ruth, Dr. Phil—none have been as controversial as Dr. Laura Schlessinger. At first listen, the outspoken former feminist sounds somewhat reasonable, especially when she’s whacking a sad-sack whiner across the chops for living with a child molester. But keep listening, and it’s clear her radical stances on wholly benign topics such as homosexuals, same-sex marriage and premarital sex serve only to fuel an already-terrifying culture of hate. Dr. Laura will no doubt sidestep her exclusionary tendencies in this live broadcast lecture that purports to celebrate moms for Mother’s Day—but will she go so far as to praise the sacrifices and accomplishments of lesbian moms? Not likely—unless her audience is filled with them. Hint, hint.
