Rufus Wainwright

House of Blues

When Rufus Wainwright released his first, self-titled studio album in 1998, we knew him as a young singer/songwriter with pop tendencies and a nasal, scratchy voice who could blend everything from cabaret, rock and opera together in a more-than-digestible form. While all these descriptions still ring true for the now-35-year-old Wainwright, he has certainly come into his own with the innovation of the “popera” genre—and with complex, symphonic tracks that seem more in place on a Broadway stage or at the Met. While Wainwright’s still plenty capable of churning out a catchy pop tune (“The One You Love” off Want Two), he seems to have carved himself a niche with songs such as the opulent “Agnus Dei” and such ventures as performing the entire Judy Garland concert album live at Carnegie Hall.
