So you might be more familiar with the campy glitz, melodrama and giant crashing chandeliers of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical production, but in 1925, Rupert Julian directed a silent film based on Gaston Leroux’s 1809 novel of the same name, The Phantom of the Opera. It shocked conservative audiences with the story of a deformed Phantom terrorizing the Paris Opera House, doing anything and everything he can to make his pupil—and love—a prima donna. Organist Dennis James and the Pacific Symphony provide the live, unnerving soundtrack to this special screening of the silent film. The Phantom, played by Lon Chaney, sports a ghastly face of self-applied make-up that still holds up even today—it even beats that crappy CGI Smoke Monster that ate Ben a few weeks ago on Lost.
