'Til Death

Sid and Nancy

There’s this one particular scene in director Alex Cox’s 1986 flick Sid and Nancy that sums up a frustrated person’s outlook on love. It’s when Johnny Rotten (the character, not the real guy) can’t fall asleep because hears a couple doing the nasty, which prompts him to say sex is “hippie love shit.” For those who aren’t getting laid regularly, it’s a fairly accurate depiction. Those who are realize this statement is nothing more than the resentment that comes from not getting any. Regardless of that quote, Sid and Nancy is a love story, albeit a far cry from the peace and love days of the ‘60s. Set in the heroin-fueled world of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his junkie girlfriend Nancy Spungen, the couple endure a volatile relationship that spirals downward, ultimately leading to Spungen’s death and Vicious’ suicide. It would be poetically beautiful if it wasn’t true.
