Hot Air

Around the World in 80 Days

How exactly does one bring Jules Verne’s fantastical, globe-encircling story to a modest stage like that of the Laguna Playhouse? Director Michael Butler relishes the test, saying, “You never rest, it moves so quickly from one location to another, as well as mode of transport—sometimes several times in one page, which is a wonderful challenge. I love it. I’m constantly devising how to do something.” Around the World in 80 Days follows Phileas Fogg as he jumps continents by train, boat, elephant and sledge in order to win a hefty wager. Interestingly, the iconic image of the hot air balloon ride was not actually in Verne’s story but has been adapted over the years. Let’s see if Mr. Butler decides to take that feat on as well.
