Purl of a Girl

Linda Purl

By STACY DAVIES

Published on January 01, 2009 at 2:41am

As a ’70s TV Movie-of-the-Week golden girl, Linda Purl won a permanent spot in campy retro hearts with her memorable turn as half of a mentally handicapped couple who wanted to get hitched in the drama Like Normal People (Shaun Cassidy was the other half!). Several years and numerous sitcom guest spots later, Purl became the only woman to land the Fonz on Happy Days, and in the mid-’80s, she added a professional singing career to her apple cart and made the jazzy rounds—often backed by former hubby Desi Arnaz Jr. on drums. This week, she’s scatting and be-bopping to audiences of both blue-note-lovers and campy-icon lusters. Which one are you?
