Anyone who has recently consulted a Chinese restaurant place mat knows that 2009 is the Year of the Ox. The Bowers Museum and their generously free First Sundays program will be celebrating this transition with a slew of festivities, including storytelling, martial arts and music. Most important, though, is the crowning glory of any Chinese New Year celebration—the lion dance! This exotic performance features an elaborate shaggy head and long, flowing tail serpentinely moving through the air for the crowd. Let’s face it—this is a lot more impressive than a baby in a sash and top hat.
