Alligator Tears

Steel Magnolias

By Amanda Parsons

Published on November 30, 2008 at 2:41am

Want to bring a woman to tears? Have her explain the story behind Robert Harling’s 1989 theater classic Steel Magnolias. This tale of a small-town Louisiana beauty shop and the patrons who gossip inside its walls is known primarily for the film version, but this story of love and struggle was originally an off-Broadway play. Featuring characters as delicate and lady-like as magnolias but as tough as steel under all that makeup, Steel Magnolias will bring out the emotional wreck in anyone. Grab your box of tissues and laugh through the tears at the bittersweetness of life.
