[CD Review] Shiny Toy Guns, 'Season of Poison' (Universal Motown)

Shiny Toy Guns guitarist/singer Gregori Chad Petree and bassist/keyboardist Jeremy Dawson (the two creative forces behind the Los Angeles synth-pop band) evidently like to keep trying until they get things just the way they want them. They released their debut album, We Are Pilots, three different times and are now on their third female singer, Long Beach native Sisely Treasure.

So with that kind of dedication, it’s surprising their sophomore effort—if you can call it that, as each version of We Are Pilots varied plenty—is as uneven as it is. Season of Poison tries to be a lot of different things, but not much of it is very good. There’s the misguided attempt at a ballad, “I Owe You a Love Song”; the generic rock of “Money for That”; and the soulless pop pap “Turned to Real Life.” To say nothing of the unfortunately titled “Poison,” a meandering eight minutes of . . . something. Something boring.

Shiny Toy Guns are at their best with bratty dance anthems such as 2006’s “Le Disko,” a radio and club hit that also ended up in TV commercials for just about everything (most recognizably for Motorola’s RAZR2). It was a style that previous lead singer Carah Faye Charnow was especially adept at. In her first release with the band, Treasure (who was a contestant on the infamously ridiculous CW reality show The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll) replicates that attitude quite well on standout tracks “Ghost Town” and the slinky lead single “Ricochet!”—the only songs on the record that could possibly give you the notion to put your booty in motion.

It’s clear that Shiny Toy Guns didn’t want to simply make a soundtrack to sweaty nights on dance floors. Which is admirable from an artistic standpoint, sure. But that doesn’t mean it’s any fun to listen to.

Thank God for this review. STG's new album blows. I came across them when they first released the first first first version of We Are Pilots (ha) and I loved the sound on that album. It was ORIGINAL. Their new CD is a rip off of a bunch of one hit wonders over the past 5 years. Do you notice how some songs sound like they could be Avenged Sevenfold, Gwen Stefani, All American Rejects, or Pink Floyd wannabes? I am so disappointed with their new album its not even funny. I'm glad Carah left because she is my hope towards something original stemming from STG... or at least the old STG. You guys screwed up big time. Hopefully better on your next album... that is if you can get one out without re-releasing S.O.P. five more times. :)

glad to see that you have edited your article to show some respect to musicians that have dedicated countless hours to the oc and la music scene. this includes all members of shiny toy guns: chad, jer, mikey, sisley, and carah. honest opinions about how you feel about this album are what people read, my advice is to use it to your advantage. I will say that I LOVE the album, and I hope more people will go and find out what it is they love the best about this band. they ARE multifaceted and appeal to such a wide audience that it is hard to not admire thier taste for appealing to the masses without being pushovers. Season of Poison is extremely artistsic and moves the listener into different worlds, just as We are Pilots did. thanks.

thank you for editing your article to show an ounce of respect to musicians that have contributed countless hours the orange county and la music scene. this includes sisley, jeremy, chad, mikey as well as carah. comments about how YOU feel about the music are expected, but attacks on personal character and career moves are unprofessional and honestly nobody cares. maybe next time you can find something more subsantial to write about when you dog the next band you just don't LIKE.
