Transitions: Robert Pokorny

By CHESNEY HIGGINS

Published on October 08, 2008 at 2:47am

Nestled between Portfolio—one of Long Beach’s finest spots for coffee—and the myriad of vintage/tchotchke shops on Fourth Street, independent bookstore {open} has established itself as one of the most distinctive, culturally important shops in the city. With its weekly events (including DJs, readings, concerts and art exhibits), {open} has been carrying on the grand tradition of exchanging ideas and (hopefully) meaningful conversation among friends and used books. Currently, they’re hosting an exhibit of the marvelously wondrous works of local artist Robert Pokorny. Leave behind any remnants of boredom and get lost within his Miró-esque patterns of gleeful absurdity. And maybe pick up a first edition of Gore Vidal’s Palimpsest while you’re at it.
