Going to Acapulco

Baja Splash Cultural Festival

When most Americans think of the marine life of the narrow Baja strip, they usually think about the fish in their tacos rather than those still swimming in Baja’s neighboring seas. Nevertheless, Guatemalan marimbas, mural painters and Aztec dance troupes will descend upon the Aquarium of the Pacific for a weekend celebration in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16). Children will have a chance to talk to Mexican divers who work in waters in which people pay thousands of dollars to vacation. MoLAA is also offering free admission to the museum all weekend with the presentation of a Baja Splash ticket. Long Beach’s watery compound has held this vibrant annual fiesta since 2001; it requests that you leave the cooking to the festival’s chefs and the forks and bibs at home. This is Nemo’s turf now.
Sat., Sept. 6; Sun., Sept. 7, 2008
