Toeing the Line
Perennial Democratic candidate Paul Lucas says he’s still in trouble for playing footsie with the Republicans

It’s difficult not to feel bad for Paul Lucas. The longtime Orange County Democratic Party activist who’s running for Garden Grove City Council Nov. 4 is currently unemployed. Although he’s a water engineer by trade, his last job, which he quit a few weeks ago, was stocking shelves at the Costco megastore just south of the city’s historic Main Street.

“It was just too physically demanding,” Lucas says. “Right now, I’m interviewing with a company that does work on a refinery in Torrance.”

But Lucas’ problems extend far beyond his quest for a new job and mounting the latest in what seems like a never-ending series of campaigns for local elected office. In fact, Lucas claims, a group of political enemies within his own party—people he counted as friends just a year ago—have subjected him to a campaign of harassment and intimidation for months.

According to Lucas, these enemies have posted inflammatory comments about him on blogs such as the Orange Juice Blog—including such personal information about him as his former work site—verbally threatened him and even physically assaulted him. “I’ve been constantly harassed by text and e-mail,” he says. “These bullshit letters being posted [on liberal blogs], outing where I worked, using language that would provoke any unstable person having a bad day to come down and take a shot at me.”

Lucas’ problems with his own party began this April, when he signed a letter stating that in 2006, then-Garden Grove councilwoman and current county Supervisor Janet Nguyen, a Republican, provided him with political dirt on State Assemblyman Van Thai Tran, her biggest political rival. (At the time, Lucas was campaigning against Tran for his assembly seat). In his letter, dated April 21, Lucas accused Nguyen of being an unfaithful Republican. “I find it abnormal that a Republican Garden Grove councilwoman would work behind-the-scenes to undermine a sitting Republican Assemblyman,” Lucas wrote.

It’s possible Lucas was already in hot water with his party when he wrote that letter. In a Weekly cover story about Janet Nguyen (See “Dammit, Janet!” Jan. 18), Lucas criticized Nguyen. Lucas was reported to have had a falling out with  Nguyen over his refusal to criticize Dina Nguyen (no relation). In fact, Lucas says, his disagreement had nothing to do with Dina Nguyen, whom he didn't know at the time. But some local Democrats who read that story wondered why Lucas was getting involved in Republican politics. And when Lucas signed the April letter for Van Tran’s supporters attacking Nguyen, his Democratic friends figured he’d crossed the line.

The first sign of trouble came when blogger Art Pedroza accused Lucas of being a “Trannie,” local slang for supporters of Tran. Lucas, Pedroza wrote on Orange Juice, “took a sip from the Trannies' cup of Kool-Aid.”

Chris Prevatt, another party activist, believes Lucas’ political career is over. “Paul Lucas has no one but himself to blame for his failure of a political career,” he says. “He refuses to admit he chose to throw his lot in with Van Tran . . . in a misguided effort to gain support from people who would never support him. He has lied to friends and changes his stories so much we cannot tell truth from fiction coming out of his mouth.”

Prevatt, publisher of TheLiberalOC blog, wrote a May 19 post alleging that Lucas’ letter represented a betrayal of his own party and that he deserved to be reprimanded. “He needs to be told, in no uncertain terms, that to be working on behalf of Van Tran and his allies is to be working against the core values of the Democratic Party of Orange County.”

The same day Prevatt wrote those words, the Democratic Party’s executive board held a meeting to determine whether to reprimand Lucas. The measure failed, according to Melehat Rafiei, executive director of the Orange County Democratic Party, who attended the meeting. “I had a duty to bring this [letter] up to the central committee, and a whole bunch of hoopla went down,” she says. “I don’t care. I had nothing against him and still don’t. I wasted two weeks of my life over a stupid two-paragraph letter he wrote. . . . I think he is a little paranoid. He thinks everyone is out to get him, but no one is. Our goal is to register as many Democrats as possible and get as many as possible elected to local office. Paul Lucas is not on anyone’s radar as far as being a priority.”

Although Lucas came through the reprimand vote unscathed, he’s not in a forgiving mood. He insists he never did anything wrong and denies he had any inappropriate relationship with Tran. “There is no relationship to speak of,” he says. “He’s just a guy I bump into now and again. They asked me if I would come forth with what Janet had told me. I looked at it like, this isn’t going to hurt Democrats at all. It would get Republicans fighting and exhausting their resources.”

He also claims that while that vote took place, he was assaulted by Marc Sussman, a staffer for Democratic Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. “They were trying to get me,” he says. “Using Stasi language—‘Confess your sins!’ and all that. So they question me, send me outside and deliberate. I’m out on the landing, and Sussman is going on and on and badgering me. He kept trying to physically accost and restrain me, and I try to push him away, and he tries to step on my feet to keep me from moving away. He fucked up one of my toes.”

Sussman denies he ever touched Lucas. “Paul and I were friends in the beginning of 2008, and I hope we are friends in the end of 2008,” he says. “We need to come together as Democrats and get along and stop all this gossiping and infighting and just work together.”

Art - I am a little late in responding to you. Your voter registeration status is none of my concern and frankly, I don't want someone like you in my Democratic Party. So nothing about you "gts my goat." Other than Vern, who is a liberal blogger for you? Frankly, you're not independent until you start treating Janet Nguyen the same way you do other polls. Your post on Matt Cunningham at the OC Fair neglected to mention he had dinner with Janet Nguyen, her husband and her brother-in-law at the Fair, but you skewer Matt but not Janet for taking a benefit.

  • Paul's former friend 09/03/2008 11:40:00 PM

The people who voted for Paul on Monday night are the usual crowd of complainers that don't do anything on the committee but gripe. They will not raise money for Paul, they will not walk for Paul, and they will not make phone calls for Paul. Paul Lucas has no one to blame but himself. When the censure came up a few months ago, Florice Hoffman, put it plainly when she said what Paul Lucas did was "stupid". Paul sheepishly laughed at Florice and his own actions over helping the GOP in punishing Janet. Frank Barbaro, asked Paul to apologize and he begrudgingly did, but it was like pulling teeth. It is currently being debated in the media that John McCain did not properly vet his current running mate and his judgment is being taken into account. Based on Paul's outbursts, his lies about his former friends and his temper tantrums, I cannot imagine the voters of Garden Grove would elect someone that is habitually unemployed, hostile, untruthful, vengeful and cruel. His own judgment and character is severely lacking and needs to be taken into account. The fact that he is on the blogs all day, commenting, demonstrates that he is not taking his life seriously, finding a job seriously, campaigning seriously or taking the voters of Garden Grove seriously. Many of us have been attacked by Paul and he has talked behind our backs because he believes we all owe" him something. I truly hope he gets the help he needs in his life and stops the revenge express. It has only led to his current state of disarray.

Sarah, For someone who is so adamanet about evoking the first ammendment whenits you who are bashing people, you seem to be extememely thin skinned when you are the target of criticism. Politics is a contact sport kid. Wear a cup ok.

#1 Astute Observer = Paul Lucas #2 Paul posted the same libelous, ridiculous, bitter, comments about me on Red County. They were removed for violating their terms of use, and they violate the terms of use here as well. #3 Paul is in scorched-earth campaign mode. He will say anything to destroy anyone who crosses him, even if that means that those who must defend themselves are forced onto the offensive, such as I have been. #4 I have NOTHING to do with the so-called 'gang' that's 'out to get' Paul. I'm not even allowed to comment on The Liberal OC, Chris Prevatt's blog, so Paul, once again, is trying to lump all of his enemies together to justify his own paranoia, but the truth is that we all dislike him for completely separate reasons. #5 Everything that needs to be known about Paul Lucas can be found on Orange Juice Blog by clicking on the 'Paul Lucas Watch' link featuring Paul as Curly Howard of the Three Stooges. Wait until you see who the other two Stooges are. #6 Paul is hereby banned from Orange Juice Blog. If you want a war Paul, you've already lost. SMS

You should also note that Paul Lucas also received unanimous unopposed, unadulterated support from the Orange County United Federation of Labor on Thursday as well. So lets add it up: 1. Lucas gets the endorsement from the DPOC for Hoa Van Tran against the will of the misguided gang of four as they are now being called. 2. Defeats the Misguided Gang of Four in their attempt to have Lucas Censured. 3. Defeats the Misguided Gang of Four in their Attempt to have Lucas Reprimanded. 4. Defeats the Misguided gang of Four in their attempt to remove the DPOC endorsement of Hoa Van Tran. 5. Defeats the Misguided Gang of Four in their attempt to gain the endorsement of the OC United Fed of Labor for Robin Marcario and not Lucas. 6. Defeats the two Misguided Gang of Four recommended candidates for the DPOC Endorsement and then comes out the only candidate endorsed. 7. Gains total support and endorsement from the OC Federation of Labor for the GG City Council Race. Sounds like a real leader and producer to me. Maybe you guys should recognize that and get behind Lucas for once.

  • Astute Observer 08/31/2008 4:53:00 AM

I dont know how you forget this little nugget: The DPOC Endorsement Committee Voted to Recommend Robin Marcario and Lin Ho to be endorsed by the body of the DPOC. So basically, Robin M, and Lin Ho got the early endorsement by the recommendation committee and Lucas was recommended to not be endorsed. Who came out on top? Paul Lucas did. Paul not only overcame the recommendation. He came out he only endorsed candidate in that race. Many a Jannie were upset at that on the DPOC E Board.

Everything anyone needs to know about Paul Lucas is available by searching for his name Orange Juice Blog. Many people who have nothing to do with Chris, Marc, or any of the other accused have come out and said that Paul is not fit or qualified to hold office, particularly during this admittedly difficult time in his life. I've known Paul for a couple of years and his time bomb started ticking the moment he became the DPOC's sacrificial lamb against Van Thai Tran in the 68th. He of course wasn't notified of his status and felt he deserved more from the party as if he actually stood a chance again Van Tran, a well-known leader of a well-oiled Republican machine. So as anyone can clearly see, he's been delusional for quite a while now. This isn't new. SMS

Is "BREAKING NEWS" Paul Lucas' pen name? He posted the same rumor over on the OrangeJuice. If so, it shows his complete lack of judgment and class. Paul is not a viable candidate because he continues to show utter disloyalty and a complete lack of tact. He feigns concern in order to spread rumors about someone who has spent many hours defending his shenanigans. His behavior has caused most of his friends to steer clear of him these days, all for the grandiose goal of a seat on the Garden Grove City Council. Way to go, Paul. You've chosen to play the petty politics of personal destruction. Hope it makes you feel better about yourself. You don't deserve to be elected. All you really deserve is a swift kick in the ass.

  • Spun Art 08/30/2008 3:16:00 AM

Lets see if we can follow the bouncing ball: 1. Paul Lucas threw gas on a fire between two Republicans. No Democrats were hurt in the making of this drama. 2. Chris Prevatt, Melahat R, Gila Jones, and marc Sussman, try to have him censured for something that is not even censurable by the DPOC by Laws; not one Bylaw or code of conduct rule was broken or infringed. 3. They fabricate this "Reprimand which is tantamount to a Salem witch trial. They fail by two thirds vote of the body even after adding their ally Phil Becerra to the body of the DPOC for a member who was homebound due to illness. Two thirds of the DPOC body told these people that what Lucas did was not punishable or wrong. 4. Then they continued to harass, harangue, and publicly vilify this man who has been a productive member and activist with the DPOC for years since he returned from DC after working in Loretta Sanchez' DC Office. 5. Then they tried to block an endorsement by the OC Labor Fed by trashing him to his own Union and his fathers union of which his father is a 40 year retired member. 6. Lucas gets the DPOC endorsement by a vote of the body overwhelmingly beating the two other candidates who were recommended for endorsement by the endorsement committee which consisted of...wait for it. Melahat, Alicia Berhow, Gila Jones. 7. A second vote was taken between the two other candidates for the second endorsement. Neither one of them got the required amount of votes to gain the endorsement. 8. Lucas comes out of the DPOC as the ONLY Endorsed candidate for two open seats LOL. 9. The OC Labor Federation votes unanimously to endorse Lucas as the endorsed candidate to represent working people in the city of Garden Grove. Am I getting this right? This guy sounds like a fuckin hero. And Art Pedroza is trashing this guy? Along with Tim Steed? Along with anonymous others? Sounds like he DPOC needs new leadership and I thin Lucas is the one for the job.

  • Art is Spun 08/30/2008 1:11:00 AM

Art, you spin all the way down the road for janet Nguyen. A mexican hating, gay bashing (Ahmansen), welfare shilling (District Satelite office), GOP hack (endorsing busty and not you). You are so disingenuous its not even funny.

  • Art Pedroza 08/30/2008 1:06:00 AM

Dan, True - it is hard to label my particular independent brand of politics. I would say that I am liberal on most social issues, and definitely more moderate to conservative on fiscal matters. I think what gets your goat is that I am registered DTS - and I refuse to join your blue party. I am quite happy to remain independent, particularly when your party feels that Paul Lucas is worthy of endorsement. What a mistake that was! As for my blog, the Orange Juice, it is an independent blog that does in fact feature quite a few liberal writers. We have the Democratic Party's Volunteer of the Year for our region, Vern Nelson, plus we also have a blogger who is a member of the Green Party. Sarah is now a Libertarian and even two of our Republican bloggers, the Winships, are backing Obama. We defy description - but what we all agree on is telling it like it is, sans party spin...

  • Dan Chmielewski 08/29/2008 9:02:00 PM

Another correction; Art Pedroza is not a liberal blogger and the OJ is not a liberal blog.

  • Art Pedroza 08/29/2008 7:41:00 PM

One correction - Chris Prevatt writes for the Liberal OC Blog, not for the Orange Juice.

  • Art 08/29/2008 7:21:00 PM

Paul lost it when Supervisor Nguyen did not appoint him to the County Beaches, Harbors and Parks Commission. That is when he went to the dark side. I guess he figured the Trannies would help him gain the power he so desperately craved. I feel bad for him - I thought it was great when he took on Van Tran - but look at Lucas now. What a mess! The final insult was when Lucas, just this week, colluded with his deluded backers to deny the other two Democrats running for the Garden Grove City Council the endorsement of the DPOC. Lucas needs to focus on his career. Like many Americans he is lost in this Bush depression. Now is NOT the time for him to be seeking political office.

  • Paul Lucas 08/29/2008 7:25:00 AM

Nick, I would appreciate it if, as we discussed in this interview, that you would set the record straight once and for all regarding the quote in the Damnit Janet Article. There was never any element of Dina Nguyen regarding my falling out with janet Nguyen. There was never an altercation based on any refusal to scuttle Dina Nguyens campaign. i didnt even know Dina Nguyen then. I had not met her. And I could not pick her out of a line up atthat time. You attached my name to a quote by Ken Maddox. I would appreciate it if you would once and for all make the retraction and correction to this issue. Paul Lucas

  • One who knows... 08/29/2008 6:14:00 AM

Paul Lucas is a very insecure person that is desperate to be in elected office. He wants to be loved because his own personal life has been a mess. Unfortunately, Mr. Lucas cut a deal with the Republicans and Dina Nguyen to try and cut down Janet and her election; in exchange, the Dina Nguyen camp said they would look the other way on the GG race if she became Supervisor. Paul has blamed his old friends in the party and lied about them to suit his sole purpose of being an elected official. He wants to be important, but it has cost him. He has no endorsements from any of the major party elected offcials, no respect from his former friends and no access to donations for his campaign. Paul is bent on revenge and not for the better of the party or community. That character flaw has led to his downfall and will led to him losing in November.
