Goin' Bonzo

Spirit of Zeppelin

By MICHAEL COYLE

Published on August 07, 2008 at 2:40am

John Bonham's drum tech, Jeff Ocheltree, saw Spirit of Zeppelin at DiPiazza's in 2006, and was amazed. In fact, he was so impressed that he lent the band the sparkling green Ludwig kit that Bonzo used while recording Houses of the Holy. Spirit of Zeppelin drummer Mark Romans is still rumbling on it with stunning accuracy. The rest of the three-piece (there's no preening Robert Plant caricature) are just as worthy of playing on original Zep gear, but they do pretty well with their own vintage instruments that get the tone and feel of a fantastically dynamic rock band just right.
