Big Macs

USS Highland Games

Scotland has given America some extraordinary things (Andrew Carnegie, Belle and Sebastian, scotch), but a few of their innovations have yet to catch on with the general American public (haggis, men wearing kilts, the Proclaimers). For die-hard Scots, though, there is nothing better than gathering with fellow countrymen and proclaiming their pride in all things Scottish (yes, even bagpipe music). The United Scottish Society of Southern California is once again hosting the annual Scottish games in Costa Mesa. In addition to some outstanding musical peformances and Scottish food, there will be Highland dancing, sheep-herding demonstrations, athletic competitions (most of which involve hurling something heavy across a distance) and the Tartan Midgets, who must be seen to be believed. Just make sure you don't make the mistake of wearing an Irish kilt to the games, lest you get a taste of the notorious Scottish temper.
