Back when OC Weekly was in Costa Mesa, one of our favorite lunchtime spots was Nikki's Tandoori Express, a great Indian joint just up the street from South Coast Plaza where the saffron rice was fluffy and the naan ever-crunchy. Our visits stopped in 2004, when we relocated to Santa Ana and found other Indian restaurants to visit (namely, Tustin's fabulous Dosa Place). One of those restaurants wasn't NIKI'S INDIAN FOOD: Out of loyalty to the old Nikki's, we refused to visit what we thought was an obvious rip-off. Our embargo continued even after Nikki's Tandoori Express closed and became a Chipotle, a self-imposed ban borne out of nostalgia and loyalty for the original.

Nostalgia and loyalty ain't always great virtues. Recently, I visited Niki's Indian Food and cursed myself for having missed out on years of its lunches. Niki's is much better than Nikki's ever was—it's one of the best Northern Indian-style takeout joints in the county and as great a bargain as you'll find in these happy times. The menu is limited: combo plates consisting of chicken (prepared tikka, shahi, or curry style), rice, naan and whatever two vegetables are available that day. Snacks (greaseless samosas, garlic naan so potent you can see the garlic shavings smeared across the naan's blackened ridges) abound, but your focus should stay on patronizing Niki's long enough to try every veggie/meat combination possible.

I've been eating chicken tikka for so many years that tandoori-cooked hen is as comfortingly bland to me as quesadillas, but Niki's version recently inspired me do something I've done maybe four times in my years as a food critic: return to the restaurant for dinner and order the same entrée again. The chefs chop the chicken into manageable chunks, then coat them with spices until the outer edges feel as dense as sand. Niki's chicken tikka isn't spicy in the searing sense; it's more like a light, dry, gentle burn, one that provokes your salivary glands more than it does your sweat glands. Dip the chicken tikka in the cooling raita, scoop some rice into the mix, and repeat.

As great as the chicken tikka is, Niki's vegetables can sometimes be just as hearty and even tastier. The offerings seem simple enough—carrots and peas, potato curry, cauliflower mixed with garbanzos. But Niki's slathers many of them with sauces so rich they'll distract you from the caterwauling Bollywood starlets yipping from the flat-screen TV above you. When I ordered the mushrooms one evening, I expected a clump of fungi. Instead, out came a bowl of meaty mushrooms in a thick, nearly creamy curry sauce, the best I've had in years. Rest in peace, Nikki's Tandoori Express—but Niki's is better than you ever were.

This review is 100% inaccurate. Coming from someone who has tried and experienced variety of indian food, this place is HORRIBLE. To start, I never factor in location. To me, location would be completely irrelevant. Good food is good food and worth the drive. 1) The owners are VERY misleading. I ask them if the owners of this restaurant are the same as the nikki's that closed down on Bristol and he couldn't give me a straight answer. He said yes and mumbled. I asked him again. He mumbled again and said yes.....the same type of food. I asked him a third time if it is the SAME OWNER and why he isn't giving me a proper direct answer. He then had someone else that was with him(I believe a friend) reply that it's not but similar. 2) The price was VERY OVERPRICED. 2 items(vegetarian or not) + naan = $7.50 with NO drink. I'm not cheap and never mind paying but this is FAST FOOD. I can sit down at a nice indian actual restaurant and pay the same. It would be different if the quality of food was decent....I'll get there. 3) Quality + Taste = Disgusting. I am the type of person that will try almost anything just once. I will know from that one personal experience if I choose to return or not. Whether I DO or DON'T, I always share my opinions boldly with others. During my visit, I tried many different items. Standing behind the glass counter and looking in I noticed that his entrees were so old, that they had dried edges if you know what I mean. Nothing even looked warm. As I placed my order I asked if he had "fresh" samosas. His wife(the owner) said that "these are pretty fresh). OK. Let me explain that I am a very understanding and rational person. I expect fast food to be, fast food. There is a huge difference. So I managed to try the "lentils" in which was supposed to be daal. It was totally sweet with no flavor. I tried his "garbanzo beans" which was supposed to be his chana masala. Really, It was just garbanzo beans in tomato sauce. I have never in my life had it taste that bad. The curry potatoes, the same. The somosa's were truly what got me. Old? NASTY and OLD. She microwaved them, literally. Saggy with insides that were a dark color and had no flavor. Even their dark chutney was like pure syrup. Naan was re-heated. The sad sad part is.....I was told by a friend that this place was good, then read this article. I went in with such positive expectations and left disgusted. We didn't even finish a quarter of our food and left. The owner is very misleading. He even made his entire menu and place look like Nikki's that USED TO EXIST. He even took the name "Nikki's rated #1" and put it on his walls. This place is a complete rip off and disgusting. I would even worry about them following health code, sure doesn't look like it. -the un-biased consumer
