Wolf Pelts

Handsome Furs

By TOM CHILD

There tends to be a certain magical energy produced when lovers collaborate in bands. It's not always completely positive for the lovers in question (see the many dramas of Fleetwood Mac), but the subtext can often lend an added dimension to the art. Handsome Furs-Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his wife, Alexei Perry-come across as the kind of pair who genuinely thrive off the creative input of each other. While Boeckner's work on the first Handsome Furs album didn't differ too substantially from his songwriting with Wolf Parade, the addition of Perry's haunting keyboards and pulsating drum machine lends the whole thing an air of gorgeous urban melancholy only hinted at in Boeckner's other project. Orange County is lucky to host a show like this.
