Stand-Up Guy

Darrell Hammond

By SHAWN SMITH

Published on March 27, 2008 at 2:40am

Who would have guessed the enormous windfall of luck that can come from looking like everyone else? Comedian Darrell Hammond-who, with 13 years on Saturday Night Live , is the longest-running cast member and holds the record for shouting out the iconic show opener, "Live From New York . . ."-has an innate ability to capture the essence of boring, old white dudes like no other, despite not being the slightest bit boring himself. From spitfire pundit bludgeoner Chris Matthews to Kelly's Reg to Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Hammond brings the feign. He even fills in introducing the cast from time to time, with a dead-on Don Pardo impersonation, of course. He's the only SNL cast member to get his own Best of DVD while still starring on the show, and if Hillary actually clinches the deal come November and brings her husband along, you can bet Hammond will have job security for at least four more years.
