Alvin Ailey Dance Co.

By CHESNEY HIGGINS

Published on March 12, 2008 at 2:40am

For the uninitiated, Alvin Ailey was the founder of his own primarily black modern-dance troupe and choreographed a mind-blowing 79 works over his lifetime. Lovers of art and dance know Ailey created one of the greatest works of moving art in the 20th century: Revelations , which is magnificent in its gorgeousness, speaking to the spirit of black culture in America, African tradition, spirituality, the blues, survival, celebration. In short, it's Gospel in movement. And that's just one piece from one of the strongest American dance troupes ever to grace the stage-and the only one that will be presented at all of the performances. Ailey's choreography is legendary, and his dance company's appearance in Orange County is not to be missed by anyone interested in modern dance.
