Some things, by all reasons of logic and rationality, just shouldn't work. Our eyes tell us it doesn't make sense (chile on mangos? Delicious!), but everything somehow ends up for the better. Like a Lynchian film, Mary Zarbano's pieces depict things as they shouldn't be-and actually aren't in real life. Her works are satisfying to the eye, yet complex. Her brushstrokes create a labyrinth of both human emotion and texture. Cal State Long Beach grad Zarbano paints in an abstract style, reminiscent of Picasso himself, but a little bit of Matisse, Chagall and Van Gogh can also be spied in her paintings, many of which depict her family and friends. It's bold, expressive, flat. It's art. And it works.
