Disillusioned with commercialized, mainstream, winter-holiday offerings such as Christmas and Hanukkah? Afraid to celebrate Solstice for fear of incurring the wrath of a patriarchal Judeo-Christian God? Maybe you should give Kwanzaa a try. Though frequently mocked by terrible standup comedians and racists of all stripes, Kwanzaa continues to enjoy underdog success as a winter holiday that recognizes and celebrates African culture, its influence on America, and the importance of community and family. Though its beginnings in the black-nationalist movement are fodder for talk-radio barbs, Kwanzaa, as it exists today, is a celebration of unity across races, cultures and religions-which is something we could all get behind.
