Great Moments in Orange County Adultery

1978

TOM CHILD

Published on February 08, 2007

Orange County Roman Catholic priest John Lenihan embarks upon an affair with a teenage girl, violating both federal law AND the sanctity of his vows to the church, which really doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. Twenty-one years later, Orange County sheriff's deputies charge Lenihan with 10 counts of felony sexual assault on a minor after Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez publishes several articles in which Lenihan admits to the abuse. The Roman Catholic Church, when asked to comment, stated that between Lenihan and Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music it just didn't know when it could possibly be open to love again.
