Four-piece, garage-rock band Epsilons live in not-very-garage-rock Laguna Beach—and look exactly like every 18-year-old kid who's ever played in a rock & roll band—but their self-titled full-length (released on Retard Disco, home to Gravy Train!!! and Hawnay Troof) is far from the subdivision sludge you might expect. With most songs coming in at under three minutes of pulsating, energetic bliss, Epsilons is succinct, totally lovable and guaranteed to give you the warm, gooey, sweet feeling of satisfaction—the very same feeling you get when you listen to an album and just knowthe band is super killer live. It's a dizzying, jangly, youthful trip: 14 songs about your usual suspects—you know, zombies, pantyhose, love and robots—including tracks like "The Epsilon" and "Red Hat," which fuse pounding surf-rock riffs with the blithe danceability of Devo. But my personal favorite is "Dressed Up," featuring a seriously sinuous guitar hook paired with a charming melodic synth and the screechy wails of front man Ty Segall. Too old to be on The Real OC, too young to drink at Ocean Ave. Brewery; enjoy it while you can, boys—life in Laguna Beach never sounded so awesome.
