Asked about his agency’s role in the Citrus War, Marks admitted his members participated in quashing the strike. “If some of them did something wrong, I’ve forgotten about it,” Marks said. Then he laughed. Paused. And concluded, “That’s the best way, anyway.”

Don't worry, the trolls will be out in force lecturing Gustavo about how it's better to just forget about the injustices perpetrated, or even better, to pretend they were the victims' fault. You can bet, John, California didn't (doesn't) have a monopoly on this kind of history. Actually it wasn't just the Mexicans (no intent to minimize their brutalization), it was pretty much all of the migrant workers and the poor in general that were victimized. This article is a document that illustrates why any people unionize.

This was a truly fascinating, if shamefully embarrassing, retrospective of the ways in which business and government treated Mexican people (and, I assume, U.S. citizens of Mexican ancestry) in the 1930s. Whether we like it or not, we need to know our history and we need to acknowledge it. This article, I hope, will force us to acknowledge this nasty bit of Orange County history. Unfortunately, I have every reason to believe the same sorts of fascist endeavors took place in South Texas during the same timeframe...and continued for many, many years...possibly even to this day.
