Diary of a Mad County

April 5 - April 11

Monday, April 10
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim clinch an NHL playoff berth as goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere gets all stoney and makes 39 saves and the Ducks defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2. After a slow start to the season, the Ducks have gone 23-8-5 since mid-January and have compiled a team-record 96 points. Giguere's performance is especially heartening, since goaltending is everything in the playoffs and it was Giguere's incredibly hot skills a couple of years ago that led the Ducks to within a game of the Stanley Cup. Of course, the other thing that is memorable about that run is the gutsy play of Paul Kariya, especially when he nearly got his brains knocked out of his head and then came back to score in the finals on a Teutonic slap shot. Oh, by the way, if the playoffs were to start today, the Ducks would play the Nashville Predators. Guess who plays for the Predators? Paul Kariya. Early scouting reports advise to stay away from his head. Tends to piss him off.
