Preemptive Strikes We Like

Here at the Weekly, we love to have fun bagging on Stanton. Then we found out how much Stanton loves fun bags. See, fun bags (what doctors call "breasts" or "sweater meat") are to women what prostates are to men—ticking time bombs of doom. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her life, and 20 percent of those cases will be fatal. Early detection is key, so if you're a low-income, uninsured or underinsured woman 40 or older, scamper down to St. Polycarp Family Support Center on March 11 and enjoy a free breast-cancer screening. Mammograms take about 20 minutes; patients don't get to keep their copy, which is no big loss—most mammograms look like boring grayscale hemispheres of Jupiter. But in case of an abnormal scan, the patient receives a referral to a medical center for diagnosis. She will also receive treatment, if needed, even surgery, all at no cost to her, courtesy of Every Woman Counts, a program of the California Department of Health, and, in some cases, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the AVON Breast Foundation or United Way. We salute Stanton, preventative medical screening, and healthy breasts everywhere.
