Subcomandante Marcos & Me

Photo by Johan VogelIn the spring of 1998, Nick Schou and photographer Johan Vogel spent a month on the road in Mexico looking for Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos. This Chiapas roadblock is about as far as they got. The bad news: they never found Marcos. The good news: unlike about 20 other foreign reporters and activists that month, they weren't beaten up and deported by Mexican police. And Schou managed to write 10,000 words about the experience ["Subcomandante Marcos & Me," May 15, 1998], the longest story in OC Weekly history.
