Why the Suck?

The Getty fumbles the American Dream

Showing vaguely inappropriate shots of children—the kinds that aren't made by respected artists like Weston but rather by just anyone—and weird nude people like those currently showing at the Orange County Museum of Art in its wonderful biennial (and, frankly, in most of its past biennials, and pretty much every show with Katy Grannan) would be one hell of a show for about a thousandth of the price of a Poussin.

"Close to Home: An American Album," The Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Dr., Los Angeles, (310) 440-7300. Open Tues.-Thurs. & Sun., 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Through Jan. 16, 2005. Free.
