FILE UNDER: POP, SUGAR HIGH

Komeda
Kokomemedada
Minty Fresh

Komeda's bouncy new album is the happiest, gayest—in the dandies-and-gallivanting sense, or maybe not?—thing you'll hear all year, so get all your expletives out before you congratulate this Swedish trio for blooming into the sweetest pop outfit under the summer sun, gay on even the grimmest of days, with coo-coo gal/guy vox and fingerpaint melodies. "Blossom (Got to Get It Out)" is a rollicking bass-driven number, with a catchy beat that dances around inspirational B-52's cuteness: "I wanna hear you say/I wanna make a better day!" The lush "Victory Lane" recalls Luscious Jackson with its moody, funky grooves and breathy, sensual vocals, while "Out From the Rain" brings the Velvet Underground to mind with its foggy instrumental arrangements and Reed-y vocals. Even the Beach Boys lend a brief moment to the feathery melodies and airy road-trip rhythm of "Reproduce." Times are tough? You're feeling blue? Well, the world is alive, and it's on a sugar high right now. After Komeda finishes the booty shaking, we'll all eat some candy, okay? ()
