Once upon a time, this was staple material for junior high English teachers to play for students to prove that literacy can be hip ("couched in our indifference," indeed!). Among Simon & Garfunkel's most underrated recordings, the disconcerting tension of the music is mitigated only by the heavy-handed lyric, which I bet Simon is now embarrassed by.
In closing, I must apologize to "The Sound of Silence," "El Condor Pasa," "At the Zoo," "The Only Living Boy In New York" and several other songs which deserve to be on the list—and probably would have, had I compiled it on a different day.
