The Outsiders

S.E. Hinton was 16 years old when she wrote The Outsiders—a touching, insightful soap opera of teenage-class warfare; of friendship unto death; of the bad, rich socialites and the gold-hearted greasers from the wrong side of the tracks. And Francis Ford Coppola—Francis Ford Coppola!—gives us on the silver screen a maudlin, dopey, syrupy flick memorable for a terrible turn by wee little Tom Cruise in a wee little role and Matt Dillon (again) succumbing in slo-mo in the streets.
