The band that started as a lark has become notorious. "We've gotten a lot of repeat fans at our shows," says Numainville, "and that's great. We love our fans, but although record labels have been around, nothing's really fallen into place. We're hard to categorize. We're not punk and we're not really emo, so people don't know what to do with us."

Brown does point out one compromise they've made since going public: "I now wear leather shoes onstage, after [Weekly columnist] Rebecca Schoenkopf picked on my shoes."

"Not me," says Numainville. "I still wear the tennis shoes."

John Wilkes Kissing Booth perform at the Next Door Bar & Grill, 211 N. Harbor Blvd., Fullerton, (714) 680-3663. Sat., 9 p.m. Call for cover. 21+.
