Press Release of the Month: Grand Prize winner

Published on May 17, 2001

"THE ORIGINAL RIOT GRRLS ARE BACK! JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS SOUNDTRACK JUMPS FROM No. 82 TO No. 16 ON THE BILLBOARD TOP 200 AS THE MOVIE OPENS NATIONWIDE

"New York, NY—Before Courtney Love, before the Go-Go's, before the Runaways, there was Josie, Melody and Val, the original Riot Grrl rockers who solved mysteries in their spare time in the classic Saturday morning cartoon Josie and the Pussycats. Thirty-one years after their debut, the 'Cats are back and appearing at a theater near you. The soundtrack was released on Tuesday, March 27, and as the movie opened this week, it jumped up the Billboard Top 200 chart from #82 to #16. Sales are topping 100,000 after just three weeks in stores."

Ah yes, the "original" riot grrrls. Remember the episode in which Josie chain sawed a dildo while Mel and Val scrawled SLUT and INCEST SURVIVOR on each others' midriffs to make a point about the way women are treated? Me neither. (Chris Ziegler)

Press Release of the Month: First Runner-up

From a Maverick Records promotional kit trumpeting 17-year-old singer/songwriter Michelle Branch: "With all the prepackaged musical fiction going on these days, it's a blessing to hear a young artist who was born to share her old soul. Citing her influences in the Beatels [sic] and Led Zeppelin, she wasted no time going after her dreams." A true blessing, however, would be for record-label publicity departments to hire proofreaders who know how to spell the names of historically important rock bands. (Rich Kane)
