See Deke Run!

Seven days of fabulous music

I'd never watched a flamenco guitarist up close and personal until I encountered a guy named Jesus Bas at a recent party in San Diego. I sat completely transfixed as this guy did things with his right hand that it seemed God intended for no hand. His performance was so foreign to everything I know about the instrument it was as if he'd rewritten the entire book of rules. Bas asked me to jam with him, and I reluctantly complied, although I was horrified—it was something akin to comparing dick sizes with Long Dong Silver.

I relate this tale to preface the fact that PACO DE LUCIA, known as the world's pre-eminent flamenco guitarist, performs Saturday night at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. I'm not going to try to bullshit my way through writing a serious essay on the man or the style because the truth of the matter is that it's all Greek to me, chillens. Instead, I'll just say this: not only is flamenco music real purty, but also watching it played is like witnessing someone perform stunts with a guitar. As De Lucia has a rep as the master stuntman of the genre, it should be one hell of a show.
