Burning Bush

In opening round, Bauer led all presidential hopefuls in OC fundraising

During a June 29 swing through Irvine, Republican candidate George W. Bush reportedly took in a cool half-million dollars for his fledgling presidential campaign. Deploying near-screaming headlines on his behalf, the local media energetically trumpeted the Texas governor as Orange County's new favorite candidate. But lost in the dust from the passing of Bush's bandwagon is a curious, unreported fact: leading up to June, it was not Bush but ultraright-wing religious Republican Gary Bauer who overwhelmingly captured the greatest--and most geographically diverse--financial support. Here are the results of the first leg--the race for money--of the 2000 presidential race in Orange County.* Gary Bauer (R) OC money rank: 1 OC donations: $80,875 Style: Talks with head cocked back as if he's looking at you through his permanently inflamed nostrils.
